Washington County Commission Approves 2026 Budget, Earmarks Funds for Road Resurfacing Projects

CHIPLEY, FL – The Washington County Board of County Commissioners gave its final approval to a $58.2 million budget for the 2026 fiscal year in a 4-1 vote during its Tuesday evening meeting. The newly adopted budget, which goes into effect on October 1st, prioritizes public infrastructure, with a significant allocation directed toward long-awaited road resurfacing projects across the county.

Over $3.5 million has been specifically earmarked for the Pavement Management Program. According to county documents, this funding will target dozens of miles of rural and residential roads that have been identified as high-priority due to wear and tear.

Commission Chairman Todd Abbott called the budget a responsible plan that addresses citizen concerns. "We've heard from our residents loud and clear about the condition of our roads, and this budget reflects our commitment to making meaningful improvements," Abbott stated after the meeting. "This is a direct investment in the safety and quality of life for everyone in Washington County."

The budget also includes a 3% cost-of-living adjustment for all county employees and allocates funds for two new deputy positions at the Washington County Sheriff's Office. Commissioner David Corbin, the lone dissenting vote, expressed concerns over the millage rate, arguing for further cuts to offset the rising costs for taxpayers.

The majority of the board, however, felt the budget struck a necessary balance between fiscal conservatism and providing essential services. A detailed list of the roads scheduled for resurfacing in the first phase of the program is expected to be released on the county's official website next month.
